Greetings! Just a few words about the TIESTEST .BIN files
in this archive. These will test whether your modem
supports the standard Hayes-compatible escape sequence, or
the time independent escape sequence (TIES) instead.
The smaller one will work as long as your terminal program
does not substitute characters for the escape sequences,
which means most common terminals can use it. The longer
one will defeat such techniques, and can be used with
terminal packages that cannot use the shorter one, or if you
want to really give your modem a workout!
Note that the transfer must be FROM your modem to test it;
receiving these files without any problems proves nothing.
To test your modem, send either of the .BIN files to a bbs
or other remote modem. Use xmodem, xmodem-1k, or ymodem
batch for the test. If the transfer just plain stops, your
modem does NOT have the Hayes compatible escape sequence.
In fact, if you abort the transfer when this happens, you
will note that your modem is in command mode, and your
terminal will not send anything to the remote! To get back
online with the remote, type ATO and hit enter.
If you use your modem to send data to a remote often, and it
lacks the Hayes escape sequence, you must either only send
archived data, or you must completely disable the escape
sequence characters (see your manual, but S2=255 will
disable it). Note that if it is disabled, you will NOT be
able to send commands to your modem while you are online.
Have fun!
